(BPT) - Among the impacts of COVID-19 is a marked increase in cooking fires. With millions more Americans staying home, cooking at home has become more common. In a recent survey by marketing firm Hunter, 54% of adults said they’ve been cooking more since the coronavirus epidemic began. Not surprisingly, fire departments are now reporting a rise in cooking fires.
According to a recent National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries — and the second leading cause of home fire deaths. The type of cooking appliances used made a difference; people using electric ranges showed a higher risk of cooking fires (and associated losses) than those using gas ranges.
