Cubs fans should just enjoy the ride
According to Baseball Prospectus, the Chicago Cubs have a 99.8 percent chance to make the National League playoffs and a 97.3 percent chance to win the National League Central division title.

And that is coming after a four-game losing streak that included three straight at home to the rival St. Louis Cardinals.

Stevens, 11, wins national archery title
Archery

Kaydence Stevens, 11, of Akron won the Female Elementary Open Class division at the Scholastic 3-D Archery National Championships at Mermet Lake State Conservation Area in Belknap, Ill., Friday and Saturday.

Stevens scored 194 out of 240 on Friday and followed it with a personal best of 208 out of 240 on Saturday.

Johnson in lead after marathon day
GOLF

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) - One year after a crushing defeat at Chambers Bay, Dustin Johnson is atop the leaderboard at the U.S. Open.

Johnson was immaculate from tee-to-green at Oakmont during a marathon day of 36 holes on Friday. He had a 3-under 67 in the opening round, then went back out for a 69 in the afternoon.

Helmick takes helm at Caston

FULTON - Don Helmick has been a basketball coach in central Indiana. He's been a coach in southern Indiana. Now he's a coach in northern Indiana.

The Caston School Board approved Helmick to be the school's new girls basketball coach at its meeting Wednesday.

Caston strives to reach 'next level' under new AD Mollenkopf
For the first time in 26 years, Caston has a new athletic director.

But it's somebody very familiar with Caston.

Blake Mollenkopf was hired to take over the Caston athletic department on April 20 while in the midst of his 11th season as Caston's baseball coach.

Martz: RHS has 'good foundation'
Greg Martz is the new athletic director at Rochester High School, and his life is about to return to normal.

Over the last six weeks, when he wasn't in charge of a committee to help RHS find a new football coach, he was traveling back and forth to Wabash High School to help run a baseball sectional and regional.

Stesiak on All-Star Secrest: 'She definitely belonged'
GIRLS BASKETBALL

LEBANON - The exhibition game between the Junior Girls All-Stars and the Senior Girls All-Stars at Lebanon High School Thursday was a night of bad memories that were trumped by great honors.

Rochester coach Tony Stesiak, who coached the Junior All-Stars, was coaching against a team that had Lafayette Central Catholic's Cameron Onken. Four months earlier, Onken's Lady Knights beat RHS in the regional final en route to the Class 2A state title.

RHS takes 10th at golf regional
BOYS GOLF

BATTLE GROUND - The Rochester boys golf won its first sectional title in a decade, but unlike its 2006 predecessors, they were not able to advance to the state finals.

RHS shot a 345 and finished 10th in the 18-team field at the Lafayette Jefferson regional at Battle Ground Golf Club, ending its season.

Grant: I'm committed
When the Rochester High School football coaching job came open in April, Grant remembered the advice of coach Larry "Bud" Wright, his boss at Sheridan High School.

"Right when I first got there, he just kind of mentioned, don't just take a job to be the guy," Grant said. "Take a job you really want. And my wife and I are both from this area. Both graduated from North Miami. We knew we wanted to be back in this area and raise a family in this area. Rochester, the community and the town, we knew this was a place we wanted to be at for a long time."

10 area players named first-team all-TRC
Softball

Rochester and North Miami had four players each, and Tippecanoe Valley had two players selected first-team Three Rivers Conference in voting done by the conference's coaches and revealed to the media Monday night.

RHS players making the first team included pitcher Lexy Holland, infielders Becky Malchow and Alexa Holland and outfielder Libby Good. RHS finished the season 8-1 in the TRC and ranked No. 6 in Class 2A.

Family has 'big influence' on Sawyer's success

Meyer takes 7th in 800 at state; Pugh breaks 40-year-old RHS 3,200 mark
The unique running odysseys of Rochester's Wesley Meyer and Eli Pugh ended with historic performances at the IHSAA boys track state finals at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington Saturday.

Meyer came in as something of track prodigy, having broken five minutes for the mile as an eighth-grader.

Regional loss emotional for NM family
SOFTBALL

DENVER - The five North Miami senior softball players gathered in the outfield for one last moment after their 4-1 regional loss to Lewis Cass Tuesday.

This wasn't just the last loss of the season for Alicyn Enyart, Emmy Grant, Josie Knauff, Alicia Tooley and Gabby Wilkinson but also the end of an 11-year bond of playing softball together that started when they were in first grade on the Denver Little League fields.

Thompson pitches Cass past NM
SOFTBALL

DENVER - Savanna Thompson fired a four-hitter, and Ashton McClain, Kaylin Silcox and Alexa Humerickhouse each had RBIs in the first inning to lift the Lewis Cass softball team to a 4-1 win over host North Miami in a Class 2A regional Tuesday.

The win extends Lewis Cass' unlikely run to the semistate, which will be held at Newton Park in Lakeville on Saturday.

Wildness hurts Caston in sectional semi loss
BASEBALL

REMINGTON - The strike zone was elusive for the Caston baseball team's pitching staff in their Class 1A, Sectional 50 semifinal against North White at Tri-County's Remington Community Park Saturday.

Soon enough, the game was also out of their grasp.

Luke Diener had three hits and three RBIs, and Cameron Ruemler added two hits and three RBIs as North White beat the Comets 13-6.

WARSAW - Rochester's Wesley Meyer won the 800 and 1,600 meter titles at the Warsaw regional Thursday, setting a school record in the 1,600.

Meanwhile, senior teammate Eli Pugh also qualified for the state finals by finishing second in the 3,200.

'Crucial' errors lead to RHS loss

FLORA - The Rochester softball team came into their Class 2A, Sectional 38 quarterfinal against Lewis Cass riding an 11-game winning streak.

They had won seven of those 11 games by the 10-run rule, including their final three games before sectional against Plymouth, Tippecanoe Valley and Southwood.

CULVER - The Rochester girls tennis team's historic state tournament run will not include a regional title.

Plymouth stroked their way past the Lady Zs 5-0 to earn their spot in the Culver Academy regional final. They pressured the Lady Zs with forceful groundstrokes and precisely angled volleys while avoiding unforced errors.

North Miami's White, Lefebvre 'long' to reach track state finals

North Miami sophomore Faith White is on the cusp of doing something her brother did last year.

Holland homers on senior day, but Bremen sweeps Zebras
Rochester senior Alec Holland had a memorable senior moment, but the rest of his baseball teammates might like to forget their doubleheader against Bremen at Bob Copeland Field Saturday.

Bremen won the first game 20-4 in five innings, and they won the second game 15-2 in six innings.
