RHS track sweeps Southwood
TRACK

The Rochester boys track team hosted Southwood on senior night at Barnhart Field Thursday, but arguably its three most accomplished seniors did not participate.

Wabash blanks slumping RHS
BASEBALL

Rochester baseball coach Cory Good could tell that Wabash had a more experienced team than his just by watching them in pregame warm-ups Wednesday.

Then they proved it even further during the game.

Jordan Burnsworth homered and drove in five runs, and Jordan Holley pitched a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as the Apaches beat RHS 12-0 in five innings at Bob Copeland Field.

Abbott homers, but RHS loses to Logan
BASEBALL

A dinger's a dinger if the umpire says it's a dinger.

That's what Rochester center fielder Brett Abbott was credited with in the first inning against Logansport at Bob Copeland Field Tuesday. But if that was an optical illusion, what happened over the next five innings wasn't.

Bad Day: Manchester catcher's 3 RBIs lead to win over Lady Zs
SOFTBALL

The Rochester softball team came into their game with Manchester Monday having scored 53 runs during a four-game winning streak.

Manchester sophomore pitcher Mattie McKee put a stop to it, and she has her sophomore battery mate to thank for it.

RHS wins Logansport Invite
The Rochester boys golf team won the Logansport Invitational title by shooting a 329 at Dykeman Park Golf Course Saturday.

Runner-up Logansport finished four strokes back. Caston was eighth in the 10-team field with a 424.

Betten homers, drives in 6 as Valley clubs Culver
AKRON - The Tippecanoe Valley softball team scored two runs combined in losses to Culver Academy and North Miami in their last two games.

They got their confidence back on Friday, bashing out 13 hits and drawing 11 walks as they rolled to a 22-8 win in five innings over visiting Culver Friday.

North Miami opens conference with win
Softball

North Miami 8, Tippecanoe Valley 0 (Wednesday): Ashley Lackman pitched a one-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts and added an RBI at the plate for the visiting Lady Warriors in a win over Valley in the Three Rivers Conference opener for both teams Wednesday.

The Rochester softball team remembered how close last year's game with Northfield was and decided it wasn't going to be that way again.

WINAMAC - Rochester's baseball Music was full of Hooks against host Winamac Tuesday.

Specifically, that would be Tanner Music and Carter Hooks, who play catcher and first base and hit seventh and eighth in the RHS lineup, respectively.

Zehner leaves RHS for Culver
Mike Zehner was hired as Culver Community High School's new football coach Monday.

He replaces Darren Rodriguez, who was the Culver coach for the last two years. Rodriguez left Culver for Portage High School following the season.

Valley baseball sweeps Bremen, softball sweeps John Glenn
AKRON - Luke Helton and Hunter Early combined on a one-hit shutout to help spur the host Tippecanoe Valley baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Bremen Saturday.

Valley won the first game 6-0 and the second game 13-8.

RHS keeps 'head up' but falls to CMA
BASEBALL

On the first warm day of spring, the Rochester baseball team might have made Culver Academy sweat before putting the Zebras away Friday.

Trailing 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, RHS scored twice and got the potential tying run to the plate before Drake Garbacik struck out Carter Hooks with the bases loaded to end the game as the Eagles survived 8-4 at Bob Copeland Field.

RHS softball shuts out Winamac
SOFTBALL

Lexy Holland and Jossie Sweany combined on a two hit-shutout, and Holland, Sweany and battery mate Kennedy Musselman had two RBIs each as the Rochester softball team blanked Winamac 10-0 in five innings in a potential sectional preview at Fansler Field Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Hoosier Basketball Magazine named Winamac guard Derek Dotlich as one of its Top 60 senior boys basketball players for 2015-16 and has invited him to its Top 60 Senior Workout at Marian University in Indianapolis Sunday.

Connecticut 82, Syracuse 51

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Breanna Stewart and UConn stand alone. Geno Auriemma, too, after another flawless season by the dominating Huskies.



UConn won an unprecedented fourth straight national championship Tuesday night, capping another perfect season by routing Syracuse 82-51. Until now, only the UCLA men's team had won four in a row in Division I, rolling to seven consecutive championships under John Wooden from 1967-73. With Tuesday's victory, Auriemma passed the Wizard of Westwood with his 11th national title.



Peerless again. Perfect again.

Jenkins' 3-pointer at buzzer gives Villanova national title; Cubs blank Angels behind Arrieta; White Sox edge A's
HOUSTON (AP) - Kris Jenkins is one of those players who believes every shot is going in.



Sometimes, it feels so right to be right.



The Villanova junior answered a double-clutch, game-tying 3-pointer by North Carolina's Marcus Paige with a buzzer-beating 3 of his own Monday night to lift the Wildcats to a 77-74 victory and the national championship.



One good shot deserved another.

Villanova 95, Oklahoma 51 (Saturday)

HOUSTON (AP) - Villanova had a night to remember on both ends of the court.

Buddy Hield had a night to forget.

The Wildcats, setting a record for margin of victory in a Final Four semifinal, held Hield to his second-lowest output of the season in a 95-51 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday night.

Prediction: Why not the Cubs?
If one thinks the Chicago Cubs aren't going to win the 2016 World Series, that's justifiable.

The website fivethirtyeight.com, the ESPN offshoot that focuses on metrics, said there is an 85 percent chance that the Cubs won't win the World Series this year.

Anne Secrest (Tippecanoe Valley) - Secrest scored her 1,000th career point this season while leading Valley to conference and sectional titles. She runs the floor exceptionally well for a 6-2 post player, scores, rebounds, defends and is an underrated passer from the high post.

Welcome to the All-Sentinel wrestling and swimming teams.

The choosing of these teams are a combination of statistical analysis, personal observation and talks with area coaches. Ultimately, the decisions are ours and ours alone and cover the top athletes from Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley, Caston, North Miami, Winamac and Culver Community high schools.

Valley softball beats Argos, gets confidence
SOFTBALL

AKRON - They might not play must-win high school softball games in March, but for Tippecanoe Valley, Tuesday's home opener against Argos might have been close.

Gaining some confidence after a loss to NorthWood 24 hours earlier, Valley scored four runs in the second to go ahead for good and nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to put away the Lady Dragons and win 13-3 in six innings.

Brey: Jackson should 'explore' NBA Draft
COLLEGE BASKETBALL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame is going to have a hard time topping its recent run in the NCAA Tournament, especially if Demetrius Jackson enters the NBA draft.



Jackson has helped lead Notre Dame to back-to-back NCAA Tournament regional finals for the first time since the Fighting Irish advanced to their only Final Four in 1978 under coach Digger Phelps, losing to Duke in the semifinals, and then falling to Magic Johnson and Michigan State in the regional final in 1979.
