Richard Hiers

Richard C. Hiers, 93, rural Akron, passed away at 6:04 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1923, in Miami County, to Elmer and Martha (Beeson) Hiers.

On July 20, 1946, in Fort Wayne, he married Wanda D. Petterson. She passed away on Sept. 27, 2011.

He worked for the Shewman family in Peru in earlier years. He then for many years worked as a mechanic for South End Motors.

Richard was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII. He enjoyed his small farm north of Akron in years past. Maintaining a very neat yard and garden was very important to him.

Survivors include his daughters, Norma Kay and husband Lynn Smith, Roann, Martha and husband Jerry Finney, Rochester, Wanda and husband Ron Bruner, Rochester, Connie and husband Gary Gerard, Elkhart, and Bonnie Gelbaugh, Warsaw; his sons, Richard Jr. and wife Judy Hiers, Niles, Mich., and Robert and wife Pam Hiers, Mentone; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Donald and wife Bobbie Ann Hiers, Logansport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Elmer and Frederick Hiers; his sister, Margaret Shanabarger; and his son-in-law, Rex Utter.

His funeral service is 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Wanda Carter and speaker Michael Walters officiating. Burial will be in Athens Cemetery with graveside military rites being performed by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation is 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron.
