Richard Smith

Richard L. Smith, 77, Rochester, passed away at 12:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 12, 1936, in Kokomo, to parents Virgil and Dorotha (Bentley) Smith.

He married Esther I. Quier on Sept. 10, 1955, in Mentone. She preceded him in death Nov. 28, 2006.

He was a truck driver for KG Brown of Mentone, a mechanic, a former custodian for Rochester Middle School and he worked at Rochester Homes. He also was a former director of the Fulton County Civil Defense and did electrical work for Ernie Hiatt.

He was in the National Guard from 1953-1963. He attended the Omega Church of Akron and the Cross Road Baptist Church of Gilead. He was a long time member of the F.O.P.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Furnivall, Rochester, and Kim and husband Terry Valentine, Logansport; two sons, Karry Smith, Holladay, Tenn., and Kevin Smith, Rochester; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Eileen Warren, Granger, Maxine Hepburn, Warsaw, June Ann Senff, Mentone, Ruth Timmerick, Warsaw, and Beverly and husband Frank Tackett, South Whitley; and three brothers, Bill and wife Amy Smith, Baytown, Texas, Clarence and wife Shirley Smith, McMinnville, Tenn., and Keith and wife Sandy Smith, Warsaw.

He was preceded in death by one son, Karl Smith; sisters, Donna Woodling and Nancy Smith; and brothers, Bob, Tom, Dean and Virgil Smith.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastors Thad Stewart and Jason See officiating.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Athens Cemetery, Athens, with graveside military rites being performed by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Richard Smith to help with expenses.
