Nina Opple

Nina Faye Opple, 89, of Life Care Center, Rochester, formerly of Akron and Wynnfield Crossing, Rochester, passed away at 9 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Life Care Center, Rochester.

She was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Perry Township, Miami County, to parents Andrew and Bessie L. (Hinsey) Funnell.

Nina graduated from Gilead High School; she was valedictorian. On June 24, 1945, in the Chili Baptist Church, she married Elbert Lorraine Opple. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1997.

Nina attended the Akron Church of God. She also was a volunteer at the Akron Elementary School. She was a bookkeeper and bank teller, as well as a homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Ronald J. and wife Alice Opple, Rochester; five grandchildren, Kendra, Angela, Elaina, Janelle and Tyler; and six great-grandchildren.

Nina was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Lorraine Opple; son, Dennis Opple; daughter, Joyce E. Howard; sisters, Katherine Kuntz and Bonnie Walters; and one great-grandchild, Alex Michael Rife, who passed away April, 25, 2005.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Akron Cemetery, Akron.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Care, 310 W. McKinley Ave., Suite 340, Mishawaka.
