John E. Shiffer
May 2, 1943 - June 13, 2017
John Shiffer
John Shiffer

John E. Shiffer, 74, Indianapolis and summertime resident of Lake Manitou, departed this life Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

He was born May 2, 1943, in Joliet, Ill., to the late John L. and Pearl T. (Rosa) Shiffer. John was a graduate of Joliet High School and then earned his Bachelor of Science from North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

He began his lifelong teaching career at Glenbard East High School where he would meet his wife, Helen. Shortly thereafter, John enrolled at Northern Illinois University where he earned his master's degree in education. Upon moving to Indianapolis in 1979, John continued teaching physical science and biology at Greenwood Community Middle School and then for 22 years at Brownsburg High School.

John was a kind and gentle soul who had never met a stranger. He lived for new experiences and meaningful memories. He would carefully plan an annual summertime adventure to a distant place. He loved meeting new friends everywhere he went and established many lifelong relationships in his travels. John especially loved his mission trip to South Africa, Longboat Key, Fla., Hawaii, Glacier National Park and shorter trips to the family cottage on Lake Manitou in Rochester. He was a dedicated volunteer at East 91st Street Christian Church where he sang in the choir and played his flute in the orchestra. John was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was an Amway independent business owner since 1972.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Shiffer; children Ryan (Marci Louks) Shiffer and Angela (John) Ngigi; grandchildren Pauline, Rebecca and Maria; and dear cousin, JoAnn (Terry) Leonard.

Visitation for John will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017, at Leppert Mortuary - Nora Chapel, Indianapolis. Additional visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at East 91st Street Christian Church, 6049 E. 91st St., Indianapolis, and conclude at the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m., also at the church. Interment follows at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions are suggested to be donated in John's name to East 91st Street Christian Church. Online tributes may be made at
