Dennis L. Thompson, 74, Akron, passed away at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at his residence after being in failing health for the last 15 years.

He was born on Nov. 13, 1942, in Peru, to Francis L. "Whitey" and Kathryn A. (Fitzpatrick) Thompson.

On June 16, 1964, in Rochester, he married Phyllis J. Craig. She survives.

He worked for Pike Lumber Company as a forklift driver for many years. He cherished his time at Pike's and the friendships he made.

Dennis graduated from Akron High School in 1960. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Akron United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports fan of football, NASCAR, with Dale Earnhardt being his favorite driver, and especially basketball.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Thompson, Akron; his daughters, Angie and husband Jon Martin, Akron, and Robyn Thompson and spouse Molly Riddell, Denver, Colo.; his grandchildren, Maribeth Nelson, Marissa Reed and Jon Martin II.; his great-grandchildren, Kaia Martin and Jude Reed; and his brothers, Robert Thompson, Wabash, and Ronnie Thompson, Akron.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

His funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor David Eaton officiating. His future final remembrance place will be at the Akron Cemetery. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Hartzler Funeral Home.
