Opal Jean Pontius
Feb. 24, 1931 - April 27, 2014

Opal Jean Pontius, 83, Rochester, passed away at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, April 27, 2014, at her home after months of declining health.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1931, in Macy, the daughter of Joel and Gertrude (Smith) Stahl. She married John C. Pontius on Nov. 28, 1953, in Macy. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2004. She is survived by her son, Bob, at home; and her youngest sibling, Wayne Stahl, Chuckee, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Bertha Mae Huff and brothers, Richard "Dick" Stahl, Raymond "Mort" Stahl and Noble "Pete" Stahl.

Most of Opal's working life was spent at Torin's where many lasting friendships were formed. The most notable of which was with Donna Shelton who visited whenever she could. Until 1983, Opal lived in and around Macy where a lifelong friendship developed with Devon and Althea Rensberger. It was their three children that became Opal and John's "grandkids". In her later years she enjoyed euchre at the civic center and the Thursday night gang at the Eagles Lodge. She was considered to be caring and helpful to those who knew her.

Though unable to verbalize her thoughts in the last months she was very thankful for the care by the hospice staff, especially Sandra and Michelle. She was also grateful for the time shared with Cana Lingenfelter and Angie Notz, two excellent caregivers.

Celebration of Opal's life will take place from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Tweedle Dee's Restaurant, 720 N. Indiana 25, Rochester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fulton County Animal Adoption and Education Center. Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanbrosfh.com. Arrangements by Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.
