Eugene M. Kelley

Eugene M. Kelley, 100, Rochester, passed away at 2 a.m. on Friday June 21, 2013, at Life Care Center, Rochester.
He was born on May 27, 1913, in Rochester, the son of Dan and Mary (Maury) Kelley.
On March 6, 1937, he married Devereux Cessna; she preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 2005.
Mr. Kelley spent his working years as a surveyor/engineer on bridge building projects, working for the state of Indiana.
He attended Purdue University for three years. He was a 78-year member of the First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, R.O.M.E.O.'s Lunch Group, American Legion and V.F.W., all of Rochester.
Gene was a U.S. Army veteran, who proudly served in World War II. His specialties were cryptographic tech and rifle marksman. He served in New Guinea, Luzon and the southern Phillipines. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three bronze stars, Phillipines Liberation Ribbon with one star, the Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Jennifer Wood, North Carolina, and Andrea Carter, Burbank, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Rhett Wood, North Carolina, and Bailey Carter, Burbank, Calif.; niece, Kathryn (Hugh) Rentschler; and nephews, Tom (Janet) Rockey, Chicago, Ill., and David Cessna, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lois Carol Kelley; infant, Mary Elizabeth Kelley; sisters, Cecile Carruthers, Mable Gaumer and Ruth Rockey.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013, at IOOF Cemetery, Rochester, with the Rev. Junior Bose officiating. Rev. Bose has enjoyed being Eugene's caregiver for over 10 years.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Rochester.
