Norman L. Yates, 78, Mentone, died at 7:05 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Life Care Center, Rochester.

He was born July 20, 1934, in Betsy Lane, Ky., to Hartman and Edith (Hall) Yates. He married Joann Converse on Feb. 19, 1960, in Huntington. She survives at home.

Norman had been a truck driver. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He attended the First Baptist Church of Mentone. Norman played the guitar and he loved country music, especially Johnny Cash. He also loved classic cars and enjoyed candy and ice cream. He collected many toy classic cars.

Survivors include his wife, Joann S. Yates, Mentone; one daughter, Carol and husband Brian Scrivens, Kendallville; two sons, Mark E. and wife Jan Yates, Elkhart, and Michael and wife Michelle Yates, Akron; six grandchildren, Heather Scrivens, Toni and Chris Holt, Nathan, Kyle and J.T.; one sister, Lois and husband Rowland Shepherd, North Manchester; and one brother, Kenny and wife Jamie Yates, Paris, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hartman and Edith Yates, and one brother, Franklin Yates.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at King Memorial Home, Mentone, with Pastor Michael Wilhite officiating.

Visitation is 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery, Mentone, where graveside military rites will be performed by the Warsaw American Legion and VFW.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Mentone.
