The Sentinel report
Rochester High School students in the American Studies class are discussing and participating in Sentinel polls.
This week, the topic was Sunday liquor sales. Teacher Rex Reinholt talked to students about the history of the closing law, which dates back to Ancient Roman times. Sunday was to be a day of rest. The class discussed how this was passed down through thousands of years due to religious values. Teachers also shared with the students the history of Indiana's closing law over the years, including the strange traveler law from the 1970s. Students were stunned to find out how many different types of stores were closed during the 70's and 80's even, reports teacher Hope Showley.
In class discussion, the students seemed to relate to the issue as pertaining to morality rather than a free market , because of the history behind the law, she said.
So with that, the student results to this week's poll:
1. Anything that makes liquor easier to obtain is a lousy idea. I say no way. Leave the laws as they are. - 21.6 percent
2. No opinion. - 43 percent
3. Leave government out of my personal life. I'm all for this free market change. - 35.2 percent
They also provided these written comments:
"I believe that the government should stay out of personal lives and shouldn't be allowed to regulate morality. It's up to the citizens whether or not they think something is appropriate, not the government."
"Everything in the world is about money and that's the only reason that this would be a good move. (This is because we discussed the fact that some people may cross state lines on Sunday to purchase alcohol.)"
"In my opinion, alcohol is the devil's water. The world would be better off if it had never been invented."
"I think that the government should be in people's lives in moderation, but let the free market be free."
"Separation of church and state!"
"It doesn't really bother me, but if you can't go one day without buying it I think you have a serious problem."
"If you want to have alcohol on Sunday, buy it on Saturday. It's not rocket science."
