The Indiana State Legislature has been asked to approve selling packaged alcoholic beverages on Sunday. Arguments for the change are that we are a free market and consumers ought to be able to shop conveniently. Also, some object to having government tell them when they can buy beverages. Arguments against the change are mostly that expanded competition from big retailers would make things tough for small liquor stores. What say you?

Denton targets Illinois
Mayor Ted Denton plans to saturate the state of Illinois with letters asking companies to do business in Rochester.

Denton told The Sentinel on Friday that 317 letters have been sent to businesses in the adjoining state.

"We're targeting industry of 150 to 300 in size," he said. "We want to get about a thousand letters out ... The more bait we throw out, the more chance we have of catching something."

Courthouse asbestos abatement bid OK'd
The removal of asbestos and lead-based paint at the Fulton County Courthouse could begin as early as next week.

The Fulton County Council Tuesday accepted a bid of $34,750 from Star Environmental Inc., Indianapolis, to remove friable asbestos and lead-based paint in the basement of the courthouse.

Conley takes new job
There is an empty seat on the Fulton County Council.

Councilman Walker Conley is stepping down to serve as a security officer at the Fulton County Courthouse.

Fulton County Sheriff Chris Sailors announced Tuesday, to no Fulton County Council members' surprise, that Conley was hired July 11 to serve as the full-time security officer at the courthouse. He starts Aug. 1. On the council, he represents Fulton County precincts 6, 7 and 8.

Jensen pleads guilty
A former Warsaw doctor pleaded guilty to videotaping underage boys without their clothes on.

The attorney of Mark A. Jensen, 63, 1923 E. Timberline Circle S, Warsaw, and Fulton County Prosecutor Rick Brown submitted a plea agreement July 7 in Fulton Superior Court.

Miller chosen for city council
Karen Miller will represent District 1 on the Rochester City Council.

She replaces nine-year member Mark McCall, who was forced to resign in late June due to a move outside of city limits. Miller was selected by Fulton County Democratic Party Chair Phyllis Biddinger.

$20,450 Spotlight Sale
A healthy $20,450 was raised by Fulton County 4-H'ers during Friday's Spotlight Sale of Champions at the county fair.

Another $6,200 was raised through the sale of specialty items, including a $4,300 kiss given by 2016 Miss Fulton County Alyssa Fagner to her father, Scott.

Jeff Gordon readies for the Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jeff Gordon always expected to be at this weekend's Brickyard 400.

The tricky part was figuring out his role.

One week after Gordon asked his publicist to delay a long-planned announcement that he would drive the pace car before a race he won five times, the four-time Cup champion returned to the 2.5-mile oval as Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s replacement and the top attraction in Sunday's race.

Russians lose appeal
LONDON (AP) - Now that Russian track and field athletes have failed in their effort to have their Olympic ban overturned, it's up to the IOC to decide whether to kick the entire Russian team out of the games that begin in Rio de Janeiro in 15 days.

In another blow to the image of the sports superpower, the highest court in sports on Thursday dismissed an appeal by 68 Russian track athletes of the ban imposed by the IAAF following allegations of systematic and state-sponsored doping.

Earnhardt Jr. to miss 2 more races
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not race again this month because of concussion-like symptoms, and the No. 88 car will be turned over to trusted former teammate Jeff Gordon for the next two weeks.

Three Millers, Bryant win Eagles tourney
GOLF

Tom Miller, Jan Bryant, Ray Miller and Andrew Miller, shooting a 57, won the Eagles #852 Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Round Barn Golf Course at Mill Creek July 16.

RHS duo the 2016 track standouts
The stars of track season were the Rochester senior duo of Wesley Meyer and Eli Pugh.

Meyer made state in the 800 and 1,600. Possessed with a finishing kick that allowed him to sprint past fellow competitors as their legs turned to jelly, he broke the school record in winning the regional 1,600 title, and he finished seventh at state in the 800. His state finish allowed him to become the first Zebra to score points at the state meet in a decade.
